Starting from theoretical approaches on identity, the study group will investigate the phenomenon of dress-code on the basis of written sources and iconography. Textile researchers in Roman clothing generally identify gender-specific and age-determining factors from non-textile sources such as grave goods, depictions and literature. But there is a clear and urgent need for a renewed evaluation of gender and age expressed in clothing, which also takes archaeological textiles into account. This study group focuses on identifying dress- and colour-codes relatable to age and gender based on the contexts and assemblages of textiles and non-textile objects. The group investigates changes of meaning, depending on the wearer’s age and gender.
