The aim of study group 2 is to assess the technical level of weaving and to clarify issues related to the materials used. A central task is to investigate the different types of looms, the horizontal and the vertical looms, as well as the techniques of spinning. Thus the participants are asked to collect data on textile-producing tools, and to give access to any technical differentiation detectable among the Roman provinces in order to create a “geography” of textile techniques in a European level. By mapping the technological aspects, a better understanding of the wide-spanning distribution of raw material and evolutionary processes in spinning and weaving techniques will be achieved. The information based on technological details will then be correlated to the rich pool of information provided by iconography such as grave stelae, and written sources.
