1. Elements of Dress

Spokespersons:

Ulla Mannering manner@hum.ku.dk

Annemarie Stauffer annemarie.stauffer@fh-koeln.de

This group is dedicated to the task of tracing, defining and analysing elements of costume, including headwear, shoes and accessories. The costume of all social, ethnic, age and gender groups is considered. The sources of evidence to be used include, but are not limited to, archaeological textiles and costume elements of other materials, iconographic depictions of costume and written sources. The available evidence is compared in order to explore the variety of elements, their terminology, combination and function. The group will discuss elements of clothing and their combination, and how far these sources reflect reality. The review of elements and material of the clothing is a significant precondition for the work of the other Study Groups.

Database on Elements of Dress

The speakers of the study group came up with the suggestion of composing a database on elements of dress, containing various kinds of archaeological material such as original textiles, various types of depictions such as sculptures, reliefs, etc. On April 22 and 23, 2009, they held a meeting at Mannheim in order to agree on demands and to collect ideas on the categories. A database has then been programmed by A. Schieck and B. Hoeppner at Mannheim, which was then then introduced to Study Group 1 at the 4th General Meeting in June 2009. It was accepted by the group and the speakers are now preparing to send it out to all participants of the DressID-programme.

Scholars are asked to fill in data on objects representing characteristic features of elements of dress and hand in their version until October 1, 2009, in order to be jointly composed to one main database by a trainee who will work at REM Mannheim in October and the beginning of November. On December 3, 2009, a study group meeting will be held at FH Köln on behalf of editing the final database version.
